Between Kings, 2024 -26

This project represents the work produced after Dickie was deployed for Operation Golden Orb, which involved training British and Commonwealth soldiers to march in King Charles III’s coronation procession. The experience revealed two interrelated aspects of army life: the immense power and grandeur of thousands of bodies moving in allegiance and the immense power and pride revealed through the uniform.

Noticing the wide range of camouflage patterns worn by Commonwealth nations, Dickie began to research their origins and discovered that all camouflage derives from ten foundational “mother patterns,” developed in collaboration with artists. This shared lineage highlighted unexpected connections between individuals, nations, and histories, and Dickie used these patterns as a point of conversation with members of the operation. Through this lens of connectivity, the uniform emerges as an archive that extends beyond the life of the garment, holding memory, intimacy, and loss within its folds.
